Powerscourt Golf Club
Just half an hour south of Dublin, set in breath taking surroundings of one of the finest estates in Europe, in the county known as the Garden of Ireland, Powerscourt is one of Ireland’s premier golfing centres. Comprising of 36 extremely challenging championship holes that offer a fresh persepective to the stunning scenery of the surrounding estate.East Course:
Following the contours of this mature and historic landscape, the talented golfer and successful Walker cup captain Peter McEvoy designed a testing and rewarding challenge for all levels of golfers. Opened in 1996 the East course quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest golf courses in Ireland.
Features of the course include its contoured undulating greens, the different moods it possesses on different days and how bravery is rewarded for those who take risks. No more apparent is this than on the par 4 fourth, where an accurate tee shot is imperative, or the par 4 seventh where the green is split into no less than four separate levels.
The East course has hosted the Smurfit Irish PGA championship and in 2001 was the venue for the AIB European senior tour.
West Course:
The newer of the two courses was designed by David Mclay Kidd who delivered a truly outstanding product to the Irish scene in the West Course at Powerscourt by truly complimenting the older East Course.
Son of Jimmy Kidd, the renowned greenkeeper at Gleneagles, he was only 27 when he designed Bandon Dunes, the spectacular, wind-swept layout in Oregon, which has been received enthusiastically by the American, golfing cognoscenti. “My intention was to create a challenging course but to do so in a fashion that allowed the occasional golfer to have fun without being beaten up. The fairways have quite a bit of width and the greens are a little larger than usual" said Kidd, there are no doubters as to whether he achieved his aim.
